8 Daily Habits That Can Improve and Protect Your Brain Health

Much attention is paid to maintaining a healthy body, but people often overlook the importance of good brain health. But when considering that your brain controls virtually every single aspect of your life and your thoughts, what could be more important? A healthy brain leads to a richer, happier, and more fulfilling life. With these great benefits in mind, here are eight tips to help you achieve better brain health, and a better life.

1. Know Which Foods to Eat, and Which to Avoid

There are a number of ways that you can support your brain through the foods that you consume, not to mention the foods you avoid. In particular, fat is important to brain health, as the brain is composed of approximately 60 percent fat. However, not all fats are the same. While you want to avoid “trans fats,” you should consume high amounts of omega-3 fatty acids in foods such as fish, and poly and monounsaturated fats that are common in vegetables, nuts, and oils.

Fruits and vegetables are also vital to achieving the proper amounts of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, all of which aid the brain.  Avoiding excess fats and sugars, and other unhealthy items, will help to keep you more focused and energetic.

2. Get More Sleep

In addition to a number of other benefits, getting a good night of sleep helps to keep your brain healthy and fresh. Lack of sleep has been identified as a contributor to cognitive decline as people age, so proper sleep can help to keep your brain healthy for the duration of your life. Our brains remain active as we sleep, including working on the formation of memories, so realize that time spent sleeping is far from wasted.

3. Manage Your Stress and Get Some Exercise

Too much stress can wear down the brain, making it tired and less effective. On the other hand, exercise is proven to improve brain function, not only by increasing blood flow and oxygen to the brain, but by stimulating the production of important neurological chemicals. Maintaining a balance of regular exercise with stress-reduction techniques is a powerful recipe for not only protecting your brain, but enriching it.

6. Embrace New Activities, Learning and Stimulation

Just like your muscles, your brain needs exercise to function most effectively. Strive to learn new skills, subjects, and hobbies to improve your brain’s health, and take on exciting challenges to stimulate creativity. Reading is another powerful tool to keep your brain focused.  All of these activities may help to promote not only short-term, but lifelong brain health, keeping you mentally sharp as you age.  On the other hand, limit activities that do not engage the brain, such as watching too much television or spending too much time on a device or computer.

7. Become More Social and Supportive

Social isolation has been associated with a number of neurological and psychological disorders and problems, so interact with people socially. Social interaction likewise helps to challenge and stimulate the brain, keeping it engaged and attentive. Similarly, reach out to family and friends who may be in need of social or cognitive support. Helping to keep each other mentally active and engaged is beneficial to everyone involved.

Last, but not least, it is important to challenge your brain by setting realistic goals and striving to obtain them.  This practice helps to stimulate and positively reward the brain, improving brain function in the process.  Meanwhile, working towards goals helps to keep our brains focused and active throughout our lifetime.
