A new study suggests vitamin B intake from food and supplements may help reduce the risk of colorectal cancer. Conversely, it indicates eating foods that were initially fortified with folic acid increases the risk of this disease.
In the research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, scientists at the National Center for Tumor Diseases and German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg, Germany discovered that dietary and total vitamin B-6 intake were inversely linked to the risk of developing colorectal cancer in postmenopausal women. The findings showed those in the highest quartile of vitamin B-6 intake had a 20 percent lower risk of colorectal cancer compared to those in the lowest quartile. Riboflavin also proved beneficial, as those in the highest quartile of intake had a 19 percent reduced risk compared to those in the lowest quartile.
Dr. Michael Wald, Director of Nutritional Services at Integrated Medicine of Mount Kisco, tells Live in the Now that B vitamins are required for hundreds of important metabolic and reparative reactions in the body. “It is not known exactly why B-6 and riboflavin reduces colon cancer risk, but higher dietary intake of these vitamins is associated with reduced formation of colon cancer cells,” he says. “This may be partly due to their role as a coenzyme in various reactions involving tissue repair. If the repair process does not go forward, cancer formation can occur. Colon cancer involves disrepair.”
Sources of B Vitamins
The main sources of B vitamins as a whole are dark green leafy vegetables. Food sources of Vitamin B-6 include avocados, bananas and nuts along with whole grains and legumes, which are dried beans.
Riboflavin is found in spinach, asparagus and green beans in addition to mustard, collard and turnip greens. Eggs, cheese and yogurt are good sources as well.
