Can Vitamin C Cure Cancer?

by

Can vitamin C cure cancer? That debate has been going on a long time, with people—and study results– on both sides of the argument. In 2006, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) documented three cases of people with cancer that was considered terminal who survived after treatment with high-dose intravenous vitamin C. And in test tube studies, high-dose vitamin C has been found to kill cancer cells, leaving healthy cells intact. Now, scientists at Jefferson’s Kimmel Cancer Center, in Philadelphia, will conduct a study that, hopefully, will determine if, indeed, vitamin C can knock out cancer.

Previous human studies were flawed because the vitamin C was given orally, not intravenously, says lead researcher Daniel Monti, M.D. “The problem is that the oral route tightly limits the amount of vitamin C that can get into the bloodstream. When vitamin C is given intravenously, you can get up to 70 times more of the vitamin into the blood versus the same dose given orally.” It is these high blood levels that are required to kill cancer cells.

The study will begin with 20 patients who have failed standard therapy for their cancer. Each will be given varied IV doses of vitamin C three times a week, for six weeks. They will be monitored for progression of their disease, with a goal of slowed progression of the disease.

Results of this study should be available soon, and we will report on the outcome accordingly.

The Anti-Aging Bottom Line:
Antioxidants like vitamin C may prevent the cellular damage caused by the aging process which can sometimes lead to cancer. Regardless of the outcome of this research, we highly recommend 1,000 mg a day of supplemental vitamin C for numerous health benefits ranging from the possible prevention of cancer, natural weight loss support and enhanced immunity.

QUICK TIP: Cancer patients taking antioxidant supplements in conjunction with chemotherapy may be able to improve their tolerence for chemo AND their chances of beating cancer. Learn More

  1. […] A study in the British Journal of Cancer found that taking vitamin C supplements before receiving a diagnosis of breast cancer may lower the risk of mortality. Other studies cited by the Linus Pauling Institute discovered that women who consumed vitamin C from food had a significantly lower risk of developing this disease. Some scientists believe this vitamin boosts the immune system by activating natural killer cells and anticancer agents within the body. […]
