Compound in This Herb Found to Destroy Pancreatic Cancer Cells

oregano-mexican-1 Test tube studies indicate that two flavonoids found in Mexican Oregano, apigenin and luteolin, have been found to kill human pancreatic cancer cells, according to scientists at the University of Illinois.

It is thought that the two antioxidant compounds accomplish this feat by inhibiting an important enzyme that plays a role in the cell destruction process. The powerful flavonoid duo can also be found in artichokes, celery and herbs, such as parsley, peppermint and thyme.

These discoveries are interesting news, indeed, as pancreatic cancer is one of the most aggressive and deadly forms of malignancy. Since the illness has few early symptoms, it is often not found before it has advanced, a factor contributing to the fact that pancreatic cancer is the fourth highest cause of cancer-related fatalities.

How Exactly Do These Flavonoids Work?

The cancer-destroying action centers around a process called apoptosis, a healthy, naturally occurring process of the body in which cancer cells self-destruct. Researchers Elvira de Meijia and Jodee Johnson found the flavonoids inhibited an enzyme, which in turn caused a reduction in the manufacture of anti-apoptotic genes within the pancreatic cancer cells. As a consequence, the number of cancer cells undergoing self-destruction was increased. In one cancer cell line, the proportion of cells undergoing this critically important process of apoptosis rose from 8.4 percent to 43.8 percent when they were treated with apigenin. The study was published in Molecular Nutrition and Food Research.

What Does the Study Mean for You?

The researchers came to the conclusion that pancreatic cancer patients would not be able to eat enough of these foods to ingest enough flavonoids to be effective. However, de Meijia pointed out that consuming plenty of fruits and vegetables throughout a lifetime would provide an ongoing source of flavonoids, which would help reduce the likelihood of developing cancer. Other measures that can play a role in protection from pancreatic cancer include incorporating foods rich in fiber into the diet while
avoiding red meat and foods containing high fructose corn syrup.

Doctor Who Cured His Own Pancreatic Cancer Speaks Out

Live in the Now spoke with Dr. Ken Rybicki, a primary care physician with Signature MD Concierge Medicine in St. Louis, MO whose main interest is in preventive care. As this doctor cured his own pancreatic cancer, he can offer a valuable perspective on the study. “There are many non-medication ‘natural’ alternatives that can lead to better health. Many plant extracts have been used to create medications in the past. Many also have been used to fight cancer. For example, curcumin, which is an extract from the tumeric plant, has been used in the past to augment chemotherapy medications in treating pancreatic cancer,” he says, adding that many plants contain antioxidant properties that fight cancer by boosting the immune system.

I thought you would like to know… The first paragraph says that the ingredients in the oregano kill pancreatic cells. Does that mean that you will kill your pancreas by eating them? Or should you have put in “cancer” cells? Very confusing to say the least.
