Curcumin Blocks Brain Protein that Triggers Alzheimer’s Disease


Brain Looking in As scientists explore the benefits of natural agents for the mind, they are making discoveries that give hope to people with fears of dementia. They recently found curcumin, a component of the curry spice turmeric, blocks the proteins that form the hallmark plaque in the brain of Alzheimer’s patients.

Researchers at Edith Crown University in Perth, Australia studied the effects of curcumin on the cognitive abilities of 96 participants between the ages of 40 and 90. Some of the individuals were administered a curcumin capsule three times per day, while others were given a placebo. Testing of memory and verbal skills showed that those who took the placebo experienced a decline in mental function after six months. Conversely, the cognition of those who took the curcumin remained stable. The results were published in the British Journal of Nutrition.

Earlier Studies on Curcumin’s Effect on Alzheimer’s Are Promising

It is well known that cultures in which curry is a staple have a lower prevalence of dementia. The current research together with past studies shed light on how this spice appears to protect against this disorder. A 2014 animal study found curcumin actually restored the ability of the blood vessels in the brain to relax, a benefit that increases blood flow and reduces arterial damage that can contribute to dementia. In a 2012 experiment, Alzheimer’s patients who took 100 milligrams of curcumin daily for three months had a marked improvement in their behavioral symptoms.

According to a 2009 study, eating curry even once or twice a week can help fight dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. When we think of this spice, the image that often pops into our head is a hearty fall or winter curry dish. However, the spice can also be used in summer salads, and we have the perfect example.
