Brain Impairments? Curcumin to the Rescue (Again)
Millions of people in Western countries are plagued with physically and mentally disabling conditions caused by the inevitable process of aging on the brain. New research has found that curcumin, a component of the spice turmeric, can actually help reverse some of these maladies that have been characterized as “incurable.” What’s more, it accomplishes this feat safely, affordably and naturally.
What if there was a nutrient-dense “superfood” that was so incredibly rich in vitamins, minerals, amino acids and other micronutrients, that it could nourish your body back to optimal health?
Guess what? There is such a superfood out there!
Age-related cerebrovascular dysfunction, conditions affecting the blood vessels of the brain, is epidemic in our culture. It manifests in stroke, cognitive decline and neurodegenerative disease. Very few conventional medical treatments provide effective relief, and absolutely none is capable of reversing the underlying pathology that leads to the disorders.
Since medical science can do so little for these health conditions, they are generally considered hopeless. But now, with the promising findings of the study published in Cellular Physiology and Biochemistry, hope is on the horizon.
Remarkable Restoration of Brain Blood Vessel Function
Researchers administered curcumin daily to 24-month old rodents and compared their blood vessel function to that of 6-month old young rodents. After one month, the treated rats displayed a “remarkable restoration” of cerebrovascular vasorelaxation, which is the ability of blood vessels in the brain to relax. This is an important factor, as it improves blood flow and reduces the risk of high blood pressure and the brain damage it causes within the arteries. In addition, the curcumin enhanced mitochondrial function, a benefit linked to increased lifespan. The authors concluded that supplementing with curcumin may be a lifestyle intervention that prevents disturbances in blood vessels of the brain resulting from aging.
Turmeric Produces Dramatic Recovery in Alzheimer’s Patients
While the recent research dealt with rodents, an earlier study examining the effect of turmeric on Alzheimer’s patients produced equally promising results. This type of dementia would fit into the incurable category, as conventional drugs merely slow its progression rather than reserve it. Furthermore, any possible benefit of the drugs is offset by harmful side effects, including a high rate of seizures.
In this research, scientist evaluated the symptoms of three Alzheimer’s patients who consumed 764 mg of turmeric, which contained 100 mg of curcumin, for 12 weeks. The results were dramatic. At the beginning of the intervention period, all three participants showed signs of agitation, apathy and anxiety while two suffered from wondering and urinary incontinence. After three months, the symptoms reduced significantly, a benefit that improved the quality of life for the patients and relieved the burden on their caregivers. Remarkably, they were even able to recognize family members after taking the turmeric for one year.
Turmeric has been used in India for centuries as a medicine as well as a culinary ingredient. Interestingly, epidemiological studies show the population of this country has a much lower rate of Alzheimer’s disease than Western nations. This is no coincidence. An ever-expanding body of research shows turmeric has neuroprotective benefits.

Other Foods and Spices Beneficial for Brain Function
Curcumin isn’t the only unconventional source for helping deteriorating brain function. Research has also shown that cocoa, sage, resveratrol (which even has miraculous life-extending properties) and saffron have anti-Alzheimer’s properties. Also, coconut oil helps improve brain function, as it contains compounds that can reduce cognitive decline. As scientists search for natural alternatives to common drugs for alleviating disease, they are discovering the extraordinary healing power of natural agents.
