Drinking Coffee May Ward Off Colon Cancer


A new study finds regular consumption of coffee may dramatically benefit patients with bowel cancer. It helps prevent the cancer from recurring after treatment, as well as boosts the likelihood of a cure.

Four Cups of Coffee Daily Reduced Cancer Reoccurrence by 42 Percent

Research from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute tested the effects of drinking caffeinated coffee on nearly 1,000 bowel cancer patients who had undergone chemotherapy and surgery. They filled out dietary questionnaires early in the study, during treatment, and a year later. This methodology eliminated inaccuracies that can arise when participants are asked to recall dietary habits from past years.

Those who consumed at least four cups per day had a 42 percent reduced chance of having their cancer return, compared to non-coffee drinkers. In addition, they had a 34 percent lower risk of dying from cancer or any other cause. Two to three cups per day offered only modest protection, and one cup per day wasn’t associated with any benefit. “We found that coffee drinkers had a lower risk of the cancer coming back and a significantly greater survival and chance of a cure,” says lead author Dr. Charles Fuchs.

All of the participants were in stage III, indicating the cancer had spread to the lymph nodes close to the original tumor. Once the malignancy has advanced to this stage, patients normally have a 35 percent chance of cancer re-occurrence, notes Fuchs.

What was it about coffee that produced the benefits? The researchers determined the cancer-fighting property was due to caffeine rather than other components of the beverage. One theory is that caffeine boosts the body’s sensitivity to insulin, which may decrease inflammation, a risk factor for cancer.

Despite the good results from the experiment, Fuchs is reluctant to recommend the beverage as a cancer preventative until further research verifies it. “If you are a coffee drinker and are being treated for colon cancer, don’t stop,” he advises. “But if you’re not a coffee drinker and wondering whether to start, you should first discuss it with your physician.” Eating a healthful diet, avoiding obesity and exercising regularly can help reduce cancer risk, Fuchs adds.
