Garlic as Effective as Medication in Lowering Blood Pressure, Study Finds

garlic just may be as effective in reducing blood pressure as a best-selling hypertensive beta-blocker drug called atenolol, according to new research in the Pakistan Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences. This is an extremely valuable discovery, as atenolol along with other beta-blockers can cause a host of side effects. Moreover, some studies even link this to increased mortality.

High can adversely affect your body quietly and insidiously for years, damaging your arteries and brain in addition to your heart and kidneys. If not controlled, this silent killer can lead to heart attacks, strokes, dementia and kidney failure. The condition is called “silent” because much of the harm can occur before symptoms develop.

In the study conducted at King Khalid University in Abha, Saudi Arabia, 210 high blood pressure patients were assigned to receive divided doses of garlic, a tablet of atenolol or a placebo each day. Scientists measured systolic blood pressure, the higher reading, and diastolic blood pressure, the lower reading, at baseline, 12 weeks and 24 weeks of intervention. Garlic was found to lower both systolic and diastolic blood pressure as effectively as atenolol.

What Are the Advantages of Using Garlic Over for Blood Pressure Control?

Live in the Now sought the expertise of Shane Ellison, organic chemist and author of Over-the-Counter Natural Cures. His enlightening observations are below.

“Unfortunately, those taking atenolol were faced with the side effects of and pre- as well as and feeling light-headed. The benefits of garlic over atenolol are clear. This common blood pressure drug blocks a family of receptors known as beta-receptors.  Once done, this sets into motion a nasty chemical cascade that leads to a metabolic storm.  Our fat storing hormone insulin skyrockets along with blood sugar.  It’s also very toxic to the liver.”

“Conversely, garlic is very safe and effective, as shown here.  The active ingredients help open up arteries to allow for better blood flow.  Garlic also keeps blood from clotting excessively, thereby halting unruly blood clots.”

“For decades, pharmaceutical companies have been trying to duplicate garlic’s active ingredients. Each time they have failed because the benefits stem from a wide array of natural compounds that cannot be duplicated in the lab.”

Practitioner Commonly Prescribes Garlic

Kathy Gruver, Ph.D., natural health author, speaker and practitioner, regularly uses garlic in her practice. She shares her perspective on the subject with Live in the Now in the following comments.

“I have always recommended garlic to my clients dealing with high blood pressure. It is a very effective treatment, as is evidenced by this study. It is easy to get, simple to take and has no unwanted side effects. We can not only take it in capsule form but also incorporate it into our cooking.”

“To me, anytime we can do something from a natural perspective, it is better in the long run. Would you need a prescription for a medication? Maybe, but you start with the least dangerous, lowest dose possible to affect change in the body. That is where and medicinal foods are useful.”
