Green Tea May Be Even Healthier Than We Thought



Hear this: Green tea may be an even better source of antioxidants than once thought. An Italian study has found that the bioavailability of green tea’s antioxidants may be higher — 40% as compared to the once thought 4%.

Twenty human participants drank green tea and the researchers measured all the elixir’s metabolites using high-performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry. They identified 39 compounds in the blood with the largest quantities nearly equal to the levels of epigallocatechin and epicatechin conjugates. They also found that bacteria in the colon metabolized other beneficial compounds, though this differed based on the subject’s microflora. (Del Rio D. et al.
