How a Little Sunshine Can Lower Your Risk for High Blood Pressure


hope and freedom A revolutionary new body of research now clearly demonstrates how proper blood levels of the sunshine vitamin, vitamin D, help to lower the risk of developing heart disease in a dose dependent manner. Researchers from the University of South Australia, publishing the results of their work in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, have found that vitamin D supplementation could be effective in combating some cases of hypertension. In the past, results from observational studies have suggested a strong association between low vitamin D levels and increases in blood pressure and hypertension. This study is the first work to draw a direct causal relationship between vitamin D levels and disease risk.

Study leader, Dr. Elina Hypponen explains that “the potential to prevent or reduce blood pressure and therefore the risk of hypertension with vitamin D is very attractive” based on the exorbitant costs of current therapies and prevalence of cardiovascular disease. By examining a cohort of 146,500 individuals of European decent, the scientists determined two genetic variants that affect natural concentrations of vitamin D in the body.

Vitamin D Lowers the Risk of Developing High Blood Pressure in a Dose Dependent Manner

They found that for each 10 percent increase in vitamin D concentration there was a measurable drop in diastolic and systolic blood pressure, and an 8 percent decrease in the odds of developing hypertension. This is significant because millions of unsuspecting individuals have vitamin D blood levels that fall well below benchmark lab test levels, and dramatically below the optimal range (50 – 70 ng/mL 25 OH(D)). As an aside, scores of past studies have clearly demonstrated the critical importance of the sunshine vitamin in preventing as many as 15 different lines of cancer as it provides a genetic blueprint for cellular replication and helps prevent mutations.

Daily Supplementation May be Necessary to Attain Optimal Vitamin D Blood Concentrations

Cardiovascular disease and deaths from cancer account for nearly two-thirds of all deaths in the US every year. Hypertension or high blood pressure is a primary cause of deaths from heart disease and heart attack, as the vascular network is strained over the course of many years and micro-cracks develop in the delicate endothelial lining of our arteries. In an attempt to prevent bleeding, patching materials in the form of calcium and oxidized LDL cholesterol are leached from the blood and become plaque. Eventually plaque can either rupture or narrow the diameter of a critical artery supplying blood to the heart and a cardiac event occurs. But sufficient vitamin D may be able to curb this reaction.

Authors for the current study conclude, “In view of the costs and side effects associated with antihypertensive drugs, the potential to prevent or reduce blood pressure and therefore the risk of hypertension with vitamin D is very attractive.” Most people find they need to supplement with 5,000 to 7,000 IU of vitamin D daily to raise their blood levels into the optimal range and dramatically lower the risk of hypertension, cardiovascular disease and many forms of cancer.
