The older you are, the higher your risk is for B12 deficiency, but younger people aren’t exempt from harm. Additionally, B12’s homocysteine-lowering effects help it protect your eyes and ears. Harvard researchers found at least a 34% decreased risk of vision loss and improved retinal blood vessel function for women aged 40 and older who supplemented with B12.[20] And one study found that low blood levels of vitamin B12 were linked to a higher risk of hearing loss in women in their 60s.[21] Researchers think that homocysteine may damage the delicate cells that transmit sound waves in the inner ear.

Why Are So Many People B12 Deficient?

You may be surprised to learn that B12 deficiency often has nothing to do with their B12 intake, but rather, the ability to absorb B12 from food. As you get older, the lining of your stomach gradually loses its ability to produce hydrochloric acid, which you need to absorb B12 from food. The use of certain medications can also lower your stomach acid secretion, further hampering B12 absorption.[22] This is why with B12 supplements, a lozenge delivery system is ideal.     I have been taking B-12 for several years. My cognitive abilities are continually measured by participating in Lumosity studies. I have BPI of 98.3 and am 84 years old. Your detailed discussions of B-12 are right on point. I have shared my interest with people 70-80 old. Most of them don’t seem to be interested but they should be! I live in Colorado State Veterans Home and see lots of people with badly declining cognitive skills.

    My blood test showed 1178 pg/mL. Ref Range is >211. Is this too high?

      Hi Zelda,

      Thank you for your question.

      Generally, the reference range for normal Vitamin B12 levels is 110-1500 pg/mL. Your lab may have a different range for what’s normal and I would suggest discussing your concern and lab results with your Physician.

    I like you information about vit B12., However in Australia it is apparently illegal to have and sell methlycobalamin . It is only possible to obtain the cyanocobalamin., What can we do???
