Men: Compounds in These Favorite Foods Help Fight Prostate Cancer


Studies have repeatedly shown that men who eat large amounts of red meat, dairy products and packaged foods are more likely to suffer from prostate cancer at some point in their lives.

At the same time, large intakes of antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables appear to have a protective effect. But are certain plant-based foods more protective than others?

According to research from The University of Texas at Austin, the answer is yes. The new study reveals that several compounds found in some of the foods you eat every day can help put the breaks on prostate cancer — and they’re surprisingly easy to enjoy!

Starve Prostate Cancer with What You Eat

The research team tested 142 natural food compounds on mouse and human cells to see if they inhibited the growth of prostate cancer cells. Then, they took the most promising nutrients and tested them on animal models.

When it came to shrinking prostate cancer tumors, the most promising active ingredients included:

The researchers also discovered that combining ursolic acid with either curcumin or resveratrol prevents the uptake of glutamine — an amino acid that causes prostate cancer cells to grow.

In other words, a vegetable curry dinner seasoned with ursolic acid-rich herbs might be just what the doctor ordered. Add a glass of red wine and follow-up with a dessert of cinnamon-baked (unpeeled) apples and you’ll have a delicious prostate-friendly meal.

Give Your Prostate a Fighting Chance

Eating foods that give you a fighting chance against prostate cancer is a smart choice.

And while the study authors note that this combination of nutrients may “have a better effect on prostate cancer than existing drugs”, they also caution that it may be difficult to get large enough quantities in a regular diet. This being said, it may also be a good idea to further boost your intake of ursolic acid, curcumin and resveratrol by investing in high-quality supplements that contain these cancer-fighting nutrients.
