Why Men Should Be Eating More Red Fruits & Veggies

Researchers believe lycopene, the pigment that imparts the red color, keeps prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels down.

PSA is a protein produced by prostate gland cells, and high levels have been linked to an elevated risk of prostate cancer. Doctors order PSA blood tests on men who have been diagnosed with the disease to monitor its progression.

In the U.S., prostate cancer is the second most common form of malignancy in men. According to the American Cancer Society, 180,000 cases will be diagnosed this year. Because of the high prevalence, scientists are interested in exploring the benefits of nutrition on the development of the disease.

Eat Red Vegetables Not Red Meat

Scientists from HSPH evaluated dietary data from more than 900 men for 14 years. Some of the participants followed a western diet, characterized by red meat, high-fat dairy products and refined grains while others followed a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, fish and whole grains. Analysis showed the men who ate the western diet had a 2.5 greater likelihood of death from prostate cancer than those who ate the healthy diet. The team advised men who feel they are at risk of the disease to eat plenty of red fruits and vegetables.

Raw Versus Cooked

Experts have a theory that if tomatoes are cooked with a healthy fat, the body absorbs more lycopene. They also advocate using an oil-based dressing when eating tomatoes raw in salads.
