Natural Ways to Fight Allergies

Not everyone welcomes Spring. People with pollen allergies may think their only choices are to be miserable, take drugs or stay inside. But there are nutritional ways to tweak your immune system so it’s not so sensitive to pollen, mold or dust.

Here are some supplements that can help:

1. Quercetin

Quercetin is a flavonoid found in onions, , , red wine and green tea, can reduce itching red eyes, runny nose and scratchy throat by inhibiting histamine release from immune cells. Histamine amplifies the immune response by increasing capillary permeability and smooth muscle contractions.

Take one or two 1,000 mg tablets of quercetin one to three times a day during allergy season.


Vitamin C is the main antioxidant that patrols our airways, reduces in our lungs and the mucous membranes of our throat.  One study found a five-fold increase in bronchial hyperreactivity in people with the lowest intake of vitamin C.

Taking 500 mg twice a day throughout allergy season may improve lung function.

3. Magnesium

Magnesium has a relaxing effect on smooth muscles, which can help relieve bronchoconstriction. Research shows that as magnesium levels drop, allergy and asthma symptoms rise.

It’s best to get about 350 mg a day, year-round.


Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant that protects cell membranes and prevents damage to membrane-associated . Along with vitamin C, it shields cells directly exposed to allergens and airborne inhalants. Studies indicate lower levels of such as vitamin E increase the risk of allergies threefold.

Take 400 IU of mixed tocopherols a day.

5. Fish oil

Diets high in omega-3s reduce the body’s response to chronic allergy and inflammatory conditions. Fish oil provides high levels of omega-3s, which help to reduce the body’s production of inflammatory prostaglandins, which are involved in allergic response. Fish oil can also reduce delayed-type hypersensitivity skin reactions, often simply labeled “dermatitis.”

Take about 3 grams of fish oil a day to fight allergies.

There’s no reason to  suffer needlessly from allergies! Take advantage of dietary supplements to get your allergies under control.

    I have a lot of friends who have been saying that their allergies are really bad now that the weather is getting warmer, and they don't really like to take OTC meds b/c they either knock them out or make them jittery.

    I know Quercetin is suppose to help with allergies, but how exactly does it work?

    Can you take it at the onset of an allergy attack, or is it something more that you take daily so you have a stronger defense against allergies? Also, are there any side effects like OTC allergy meds?

    • Quercetin is basically nature's antihistamine. It works by blocking the release of histamine — the stuff that causes causes the inflammatory symptoms that we recognize as “allergies” when we're exposed things we're allergic to. Symptoms like runny noses, sneezing, itchy eyes are all related to histamine release as a result of being exposed to airborne allergens like pollen, mold or dust.

      The best way to use quercetin to fight seasonal allergies is to start taking it daily 2-3 weeks before allergy season begins to build up levels within your body, which will give you an increased tolerance to pollen and histamine. That doesn't mean it's too late to start though! Just expect to wait a few days before you begin to notice major improvements. Taking quercetin with bromelain and vitamin C will help to improve its absorption and effectiveness.

      Side effects? Virtually non-existent, which is great since OTC allergy drugs can have some particularly yucky ones. As long as you don't overdo it (take more than the amount recommended on the bottle), you should not experience any side effects. Extremely large doses may cause stomach upset, however.

    I love this article, its one of my all-time favorites! I tell everyone with allergies to take Quercetin and they have all been happy they tried it!

    I've been taking 4 Quercetin pills per day for the past 2 months and my allergy symptoms have definitely improved. I like how it's natural and doesn't cause drowsiness. It's so much better than over-the-counter stuff like Benadryl that makes you sleepy.

  7. I read about eating bee pollen from my local area about 15 years ago and started doing that because my allergies had become more severe and debilitating as I marched through my 30s. The allergies ended. I’ve always made a special effort every year to get a 1/2 teaspoon or so of fresh local bee pollen every year from about February through May and small amounts for the rest of the year.
    It makes sense. Exposing yourself to very small amounts of what pollens are in your area builds up a tolerance to it.

      Thats great!!! I’ve heard of that approach however I have never heard about the successes directly from an individual who has tried it. Good to know! On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate the efficacy of that approach? Do you take anything else in addition?
