How Sugar Makes You AGE Faster (and How You Can Reverse the Damage)

by

Sugar Imagine 26 five-pound bags of sugar lined up on a counter. Now imagine eating ALL of that sugar.

Well, you might be shocked to learn that’s about how much added sugar the average Americans consume per year — 130 pounds — more than half a cup per day.[1] That’s A LOT of sugar wreaking havoc on your body and your health!

If you find that hard to believe, that’s probably because sugar has become so ubiquitous in our diets that even the most health conscious among us don’t realize how much we’re consuming. For example, did you know that a single 12-ounce can of soda contains, on average, 11 teaspoons of sugar — just shy of a ¼ cup?

How Hidden Sugar Is Sabotaging Your Health

Even if you consider yourself a healthy eater, chances are you’re still consuming more sugar than you realize. Because it’s not just sodas and other obvious sugary culprits like cookies, candy and ice cream you need to watch out for.

These days, there’s sugar hidden in most packaged food products — from canned soups and sauces to breads, crackers, yogurt and peanut butter. Even the “healthier” all natural and organic versions of these foods typically contain added sweeteners.

And did you know that many commercially grown fruits and vegetables are hybrids that have been designed through selective breeding to contain significantly higher levels of sugar — and lower levels of fiber, minerals and other nutrients — than their wild counterparts? Here’s a fact that few people realize: A ripe Cavendish banana, the variety that has dominated the U.S. market for the past 50 years, has a glycemic load of 16 — the same as a 5.5 ounce serving of Coca-Cola![2]

All of these things, combined with other high-glycemic carbohydrates (things like baked goods, pasta, white rice and potatoes, which rapidly convert to sugar in the bloodstream) can add up to serious trouble over time.

But rather than embarking on a super-restrictive low-glycemic diet, I’ve found a much easier way to get the help I need to neutralize the health-robbing effects of sugar. I’ll tell you more about this simple, natural solution in a moment, but first you must understand…

What Can Happen When You Eat Too Much Sugar

There’s no question that consuming too much sugar will damage your health. But how much is too much?

According to Dr. Robert Lustig, a leading expert on obesity and sugar metabolism, the human body can safely metabolize only about six teaspoons of added sugar per day.[3] That’s roughly 5% of your daily caloric intake. But most Americans are consuming far more than that, and the consequences can be tragic.

A study published last year in JAMA Internal Medicine found that 71.5% of U.S. adults get more than 10% of their daily calories from added sugar in foods and drinks — and that higher levels of sugar consumption are correlated with higher risk of cardiovascular complications.[4]

And there’s more. Beyond the well-established risks of excess sugar consumption, such as weight gain, insulin resistance (and its related dangers) and tooth decay, the sweet stuff has also been linked to:

  • Suppressed immune function[5]
  • Premature skin aging[6]
  • Digestive problems[7]
  • Food addiction[8]
  • Mood imbalances[9]
  • Learning disorders[9]
  • Poor memory formation[9]

Those last four linkages point to a particularly alarming truth that researchers are only just starting to understand: All of this sugar we’re ingesting can have a negative effect on our cognitive health.

Your Brain on Sugar

Recent research indicates that a diet high in sugar reduces the production of a brain chemical called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF, which plays an important role in the survival, maintenance and growth of neurons. Without BDNF, our brains can’t form new memories and we can’t learn or remember much of anything. It also seems that as levels of BDNF decrease, sugar metabolism worsens, leading to a destructive cycle that can be difficult if not impossible to reverse.[9]

Another problem related to excess sugar consumption is the matter of glycation, which is a biochemical reaction that occurs when excess sugar in the bloodstream bonds to proteins or lipids, leading to the formation of toxic compounds called advanced glycation end products, or AGEs.

This acronym couldn’t be more appropriate because it describes exactly what these destructive compounds do to you. By middle age, after decades of buildup, AGEs-related damage can begin to impair your focus and mental clarity.

How Sugar Makes You AGE Faster

The health consequences caused by glycation are certainly not limited to your brain. Considered one of the major causes of aging, it also affects your heart, kidneys, lungs, skin, eyes and other organs.

Your body is primarily made up of proteins, which is why anything that interferes with healthy protein formation can have a dramatic impact on your body’s function and appearance.

Glycation happens when foods rapidly convert to sugar molecules in the bloodstream and attach themselves to cellular protein molecules, leading to the formation of AGEs and the accumulation of irreversible “cross-links” between the adjoining protein molecules. This oxidative process is the same chemical reaction that makes a steak turn brown when it’s seared and gives a loaf of bread a darkened crust — great for making food flavorful, not so great for your health.

For example, when glycation occurs in the skin, sugar molecules attach themselves to collagen fibers, triggering a series of chemical reactions that eventually culminate in extensive cross-linking of collagen. The result: visible signs of aging.[6]

While healthy collagen fibers slide over one another, keeping the skin elastic, as collagen cross-links form, the skin looses its ability to “bounce back,” which means wrinkles, sagging and roughness.

Unfortunately, glycation happens to all of us, even if we’re healthy, and elevated blood sugar levels only make it worse. The good news is that you can easily and conveniently get the help you need to stem the tide of glycation and accelerated aging.

Effectively Block — and Even Reverse — the Damage Sugar Causes to Your Body

L-carnosine is a natural protein that was discovered by Russian chemist Vladimir Gulevich in the early 1900s. Due to the fact that much of the early research on L-carnosine was done in Russia, it flew mostly under the radar in the U.S. until somewhat recently when findings on its remarkable anti-aging effects started to emerge.

Though L-carnosine, which consists of the amino acids beta-alanine and L-histidine, is naturally present in all of the body’s cells, its concentration decreases with age, and remarkable new research is showing that supplementing with L-carnosine can work wonders for your health and appearance.

Not only is L-carnosine a powerful antioxidant, it also has been shown to prevent glycation from occurring while eliminating cross-links that have previously formed in cellular proteins, making your cells act like younger, healthier versions of themselves. Research has shown that L-carnosine bonds with rogue molecules known as carbonyl groups, which if left alone, will attack and bind with proteins, leading to glycation.[10]

L-carnosine’s anti-glycation properties have amazing health benefits. In effect, L-carnosine acts to neutralize the harmful effects of sugar, slowing down the aging process by protecting and rejuvenating cells throughout your body.

Potent Support for Balanced Blood Sugar

Studies conducted on human cells and laboratory animals have also shown that L-carnosine has the ability to dramatically extend life span, with exciting implications for human longevity.[11,12]

In addition to its anti-glycation effects, research has shown that L-carnosine supplementation may help to support normal insulin production and sensitivity, as well as balanced blood sugar.[13]

Other studies showing the effects of L-carnosine supplementation on the brain are particularly notable.[14,15] Brain tissue naturally contains high levels of carnosine, which helps to reduce the oxidative stress and glycation damage that it is particularly vulnerable to.

L-carnosine has also been shown to be a powerful chelator of harmful heavy metal ions in the brain, meaning that it binds to and deactivates them, helping to minimize their toxicity.[16]

Should You Take an L-Carnosine Supplement?

If you want younger-looking skin, more energy and the peace of mind of knowing that you’re doing all you can to protect the cells in your brain, eyes, heart and entire body against the effects of glycation, the answer is a resounding “YES!”

And if you’re someone who struggles with blood sugar or has a hard time avoiding sugar or other high-glycemic foods, or even if you just want an extra safeguard in place, my answer is “Absolutely.”

The fact is, just about everyone can benefit from taking L-carnosine, and the older you get, the more profound its effects can be, since your natural levels continue to fall as you age. Unfortunately it is nearly impossible to get sufficient L-carnosine even from a healthy diet.

The L-Carnosine Supplement I Recommend

In my nearly 20 years in the natural health industry, I’ve seen many “miracle” ingredients come and go. While these fads are usually relatively harmless, it’s an unfortunate thing when people spend money on trendy supplements made by companies that don’t really have their best interests in mind.

What happens too often is that people end up with low quality, low dose products that simply don’t work, and then they assume it was all just hype to begin with. It’s especially unfortunate when it’s an ingredient like L-carnosine, which is one of the single most effective ways to combat the ravages of too much sugar, and keep your body and mind healthy.

So I encourage you to shop around for a pure, highly-effective and affordable L-carnosine to add to your regular supplement routine. The one developed by my company, Stop Aging Now is called PurCarnosine, and it’s an easy way to get a potent 500 mg dose of pure L-carnosine in just 1 small capsule per day.
