The key to a long life of optimal wellness doesn’t involve eating just any type of carbs and protein. It is good news is that you don’t need to starve yourself and jeopardize your health in pursuit of a possible longevity advantage. “We’ve shown that when compared head-to-head, mice got the same benefits from a low-protein, high-carbohydrate diet as a 40pc caloric restriction diet, “says researcher Dr. Stephen Simpson. “Except for the fanatical few, no one can maintain a 40pc caloric reduction in the long-term, and doing so can risk loss of bone mass, libido and fertility.”

In the study from the University of Sydney, scientists evaluated mice for eight weeks as they were fed diets comprised of differing protein-to-carbs ratios. They also assessed the effects of calorie restriction and compared them to the effects of food being available at all times. The results showed that blood sugar, insulin activity and cholesterol level benefits were equal in the calorie-restricted rats and those who were given the low-protein, high-carb (LPHC) diet. Interestingly, even though the mice on the LPHC diet ate more, they didn’t gain weight and had higher metabolism than the mice on the calorie-restricted diet. The study was published in Cell Health.

LPHC Diet Could Lead to Healthier Aging

‘It still holds true that reducing food intake and body weight improves metabolic health and reduces the risk of diseases like Type 2 diabetes, obesity, and fatty liver disease,” adds Simpson. “However, according to these mouse data and emerging human research, it appears that including modest intakes of high-quality protein and plenty of healthy carbohydrates in the diet will be beneficial for health as we age.”

Although calorie restriction is associated with certain health advantages, it clearly has serious risks. Following a LPHC diet is a much safer means of boosting wellness and adding years to your life, as it doesn’t appear to have a downside.
