Vitamin D: A Complementary Option for Chronic Pain? If you’re one of the many who think vitamin D is only good for your bones, you might be pleasantly surprised to learn that deficiency of this “sunshine vitamin” is associated with back, knee and abdominal pain. It’s also linked to headaches, persistent musculoskeletal pain and fibromyalgia. This means that, when your levels are low your bones, muscles, nerves and even your cartilage can start aching.

However, when your stores of vitamin D are replenished, it may help rid you of that constant pain.

Vitamin D: A Complementary Option for Chronic Pain?

The study, published in the International Journal of Rheumatic Disease analyzed 58 patients with chronic muscoskeletal pain and vitamin D deficiency. This included 30 patients with fibromyalgia. One of the interesting aspects of the study is that all of these patients were relatively young, between the ages of about 28 to 46.

Over the course of the study, the participants received 50,000 IU of vitamin D3 daily. After three months of treatment, the patients’ vitamin D3 (25-OH D3) levels increased from an average of 10.6 ng/mL to 46.5 ng/mL. They also showed marked improvement in their symptoms. Levels of pain, weakness, tender areas, and even symptoms of depression all decreased. In fact, 85% of the patients said they were satisfied with the treatment.
